Diving Masks
The mask is a vital part of a diver’s gear. It not only protects the eyes and provides clear sight underwater, but encloses the nose so your ears can equalize to the pressure as you descend. The single most important thing is to make sure your mask is watertight. To check this, simply place your mask on your face, not secured by the strap, and breathe in through your nose. If the mask stays in place, it is a good fit. If it slips or falls off, you will need to get a different mask.
The area surrounding the lens of your mask, including the sides and nose is known as the skirt. You can choose between having a solid color (generally black) or clear skirt. Clear skirts tend to be preferable to many divers because they allow for an increased field of vision. However, a few still prefer black skirts because they allow the diver to only focus on what’s in front of them, decreasing distraction from a particular task.
The diver also has the choice of whether to have one lens or two in their mask. The one lens mask is much like a windshield and provides an unobstructed view for the diver. Some divers prefer this because it gives a greater feeling of openness. The two lens mask is very much like looking through a pair of standard glasses, although there is slightly less visibility when looking down. However, when corrective lenses are needed for a mask, often the two lens mask is the only option.
