Diving Fins
Diving fins are one of the most important parts of a diver’s gear. There are several factors to be considered when selecting a pair of fins. The first is the temperature of the water you’ll be diving in. For warm water dives, full foot fins are preferable. They are designed to be worn with bare feet and are convenient for diving off of boats.
For cold water dives, adjustable heel fins are preferable. They can be worn with boots or thermal foot protection to help prevent discomfort in colder temperatures.
Another choice to consider is whether to select traditional fins or split fins. Traditional fins have one complete blade for each foot, whereas split fins are divided in the middle of each foot. The advantages of split fins include greater speed in the water, are lighter, and may provide better control for the experienced user. However, traditional fins are far easier to use when moving about on boats or land.
When it comes to colour, fins can be found in a great variety of bright and subtle shades. Bright shades are generally considered preferable as they are easier to spot in the water. However, there is no particular colour that is more likely to attract sea life to come near you. Nor is there one likely to scare creatures away.
The most important aspect in selecting fins is sizing. Fins should fit snugly but still comfortably. Full foot fins are fitted just like a normal shoe, and so will generally match your regular shoe size. The fitting of adjustable heel fins often varies by brand. Fins should always be tried on for fit before purchase.
