Dive Computers
The dive computer is a device used to calculate your maximum dive time, which makes it a key tool for allowing longer dives in safer conditions. The computers are based on an algorithm which adjusts for both tissues with fast blood flow (such as the heart and brain) and slower blood flow. It uses this information to estimate the nitrogen in your body. Based on the amount of time you’ve been submerged and your depth, the computer then calculates how much longer you can safely remain underwater.
Dive computers have several key features that make them convenient tools. One is a large, easy-to-read display that makes it simpler and more efficient to check than dive tables. Another is computer integration, allowing the diver to download settings and statistics directly to and from their PC. Many newer models of dive computers fit around the wrist, much like a watch, making them easier to check. Most models also feature audio warning systems as an extra line of caution.
Almost all dive computers are compatible with enriched air (nitrox). Because nitrox generally allows for longer dive times, it is becoming ever more popular, making this feature key.
It is important not to become overly dependent on your dive computer; it should supplement your dive tables, not replace them. It is also key not to turn your dive computer on and off while in use, or to share it with another diver as this will effect the accuracy of the readings. Dive computers are also known as decompression meters or deco computers and can be found in most dive shops.
